Making Merton

Funded by the London Borough of Merton

2025

Project celebrating the 60th anniversary of Merton Council, which was formed from the mergering of Mitcham, Wimbledon and Merton & Morden councils. Made in Merton was commissioned to produce three textile artworks, each dedicated to one of the merged council areas.

We ran workshops in Merton libraries to find out what people wanted to include in the artworks and to create block-printed fabric–a link to Merton’s textile heritage–with them to make it a project by and for the community. This fabric was used to create the letters spelling out the place names at the centre of each artwork. Surrounding the words are images of local heroes, landmarks and industries.  The palette is predominantly green and purple–Merton colours–and the artworks celebrate Merton’s design heritage, with lots of Morris and Liberty patterns, with a modern twist, as 90% of the fabric we used was upcycled or repurposed.
